IUS-BSE Report 2018-19

The 28th Annual General Meeting of the Society along with the International Conference on "Biomaterials, Bioengineering and Biotheranostics" BioMET 2018 was held during July 24-28th, 2018 at VIT University, Vellore organized by Center for Biomaterials, Cellular and Molecular Theranostics, VIT, Vellore with Dr. Geetha Manivasagam, VIT as the Conference Chair. Prof Ashutosh Chilkoti, the Alan L. Kaganov Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Duke University was awarded the Chandra P. Sharma Award 2018. He delivered a plenary lecture during the meeting. Over 200 delegates including eminent speakers from abroad also participated in the conference.

The Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India presently have a total of 838 members with 737 Indian Life Members, 34 Foreign Life Members, 41 Organizational members from India and abroad, 24 Awardee members and 2 Honorary members. Society endorsed the National Workshop on ICME Approaches to Innovation in Biomedical Implants held during August 11-12, 2018 at IISC Bangalore. Society is also endorsing the International Conference on Advances in Polymer Science & Technology, to be held in Kathmandu, Nepal from November 1-3, 2018.

IUS-BSE Report 2017-18 (up to Dec 31, 2017)

The 27th Annual meeting of the Society was held along with the 6th Asian Biomaterials Congress (ABMC6) during October 25-27, 2017 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala India. ABMC6 was hosted by Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST) with Dr. Harikrishna Varma as the Congress President, Dr. Chandra P. Sharma as Honorary President and Dr. Manoj Komath as Organizing Secretary. The theme of the conference was "Innovative Biomaterials: Technologies for Life and Society". This conference was co-organized by the Asia Pacific Society for Artificial Organs, Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs (India) and Society for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (India). A council meeting of the Asian Biomaterials Federation was also held during this event. Prof. Gilson Khang, Chonbuk National University, South Korea delivered the Congress Plenary and was awarded with Chandra P Sharma Award 2017. Other two plenary was by Prof. Yasuhiko Tabata, Kyoto University Japan and Prof. Xiao Cheng Liu, TEDA International Cardiovascular Hospital, China. There were 24 keynote presentations, 80 invited and 20 contributory oral presentations and over 150 poster presentations during ABMC6. Delegates from all parts of Asia including, China, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Mauritius, Indonesia and India and also delegates from USA, Portugal and Australia attended the 6th ABMC.

As on December 2017 the Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India had a total of 832 members with 731 Indian Life Members, 34 Foreign Life Members, 41 Organizational members from India and abroad, 24 Awardee members and 2 Honorary members. The 28th National Conference of the Society will be held at VIT University, Vellore during 24-28, July 2018 organized by Dr. Geetha Manivasagam, VIT University. IUS-BSE Report 2017

The 27th Annual meeting of the Society will be held along with the 6th Asian Biomaterials Congress (ABMC6) during October 25-27, 2017 at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala India. The 25th anniversary of the Australasian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering held in Canberra, Australia from 18-20 April 2017 was attended by the SBAOI members, Dr. Harikrishna Varma (SCTIMST), Dr. Roy Joseph (SCTIMST), Mr. Willi Paul (SCTIMST), Prof. Ashok Kumar (IIT Kanpur), Dr. R. Jayakumar (AMRITA, Kochi) and Dr. N. Rajendran (Anna University, Chennai). They also delivered keynote talks during the 7th Indo-Australian Conference on Biomaterials, Implants, Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine.

IUS-BSE Report 2016

The conference hosted a theme lecture by Prof. JL Brash, 9 plenary talks, 13 keynote lectures, 36 invited talks and 44 oral presentations in three parallel sessions with a dedicated poster session (100 posters). MAHE award for the best faculty presentation was for Sushma Talegaonkar, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. The Bajpai-Saha awards for best student oral presentation were awarded to Greeshma Thrivikraman, IISc Bangalore and Prasanta Kalita, IIT Delhi. Best five poster awards were presented to Piyali Das, West Bengal University; Narendran P., CGCRI, Kolkata; Veena Singh, IIT Delhi; Itishree Ratha, CGCRI, Kolkata and Dimple Chouhan, IIT Guwahati.

It was decided to hold the 6th Asian Biomaterials Congress (6ABMC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala during October 2017. A website is added in the society website sbaoi.org for ABMC6. A full website will be launched soon. IUS-BSE Report 2015

The 25th Annual Meeting of the Society along with the Indo-Australian Conference on "Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering Drug Delivery System & Regenerative Medicine - BiTERM2015" was held during February 5-7, 2015 at Anna University, Chennai with Dr. Rajendran, Department of Chemistry, Anna University as the Convener. BiTERM2015 was organized jointly with the Australian Society for Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering (ASBTE). BiTERM2015 is the sixth in the series of Indo-Australian conferences with the first one organized in 2005 at Trivandrum. Prof. John Ramshaw, CSIRO, Australia received the Chandra P Sharma Award 2015 and delivered a plenary lecture during the meeting. Prof. Joel D. Bumgardner, USA; Prof. Zee Upton, Australia and Prof. Chong-Su Cho, Korea also delivered plenary lectures during this conference. Fellow of SBAOI (FBAO award) was awarded to Prof. Bikramjit Basu, IISc, Bangalore; Dr. Prabha D. Nair, SCTIMST, Trivandrum and Prof. Bhuvanesh Gupta, IIT Delhi for their significant contributions to biomaterials science. Over 250 delegates including eminent speakers from USA, Japan, Australia, South Korea, Portugal and India participated in the conference. The conference hosted 10 keynote lectures, 26 invited talks and 88 oral presentations in two parallel sessions with a dedicated poster session (175 posters). MAHE award for the best faculty presentation was for Ira Bhatnagar, CCMB, Hyderabad and Manitha B. Nair, AMRITA Kochi. The Bajpai-Saha award for best student oral presentation was awarded to Aravind Kumar Rengan, IIT Bombay and L. Amalorpava Mary, Anna University, Chennai. Best poster awards were presented to Resmi V. Nair, SCTIMST; R. Arun Kumar, AMRITA, Kochi; S. Dhivya, SRM University, Chennai; and Mamatha M Pillai, PSG Institute, Coimbatore.
Dr. H.K. Varma, President, SBAOI attended the recently concluded ABMC5 at Taipei, Taiwan, May 2015 and made a presentation on Organizing the ABMC6 at Thiruvananthapuram, India organized by SBAOI. Executive committee of the Society has tentatively decided to hold this conference during October 2017. A formal announcement about the programme will be advertised soon.

IUS-BSE Report 2014

The 24th annual meeting of the Society along with the International Conference on "Medical Materials, Devices & Regenerative Medicine - MMDRM 2014" was held during January 11-13, 2014 at College of Biomedical Engineering & Applied Sciences, Kathmandu, Nepal with Dr. Vishwa P. Shrivastava as the Convener. MMDRM 2014 is the second in the series of MMDRM conferences with the first one organized in 2008. Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, Center for Nanofibers & Nanotechnology, NUS received the Chandra P Sharma Award 2014 and delivered a plenary lecture during the meeting. Prof. Buddy Ratner, Prof. Jonathan Knowles, Prof. Yasuhiko Tabata and Dr. Chandra P. Sharma also delivered plenary lectures during this conference. Over 200 delegates including eminent speakers from USA, UK, Japan, Germany, Australia, China, Netherlands, Singapore, Italy, Poland, Russia, Nepal and India participated in the conference. The conference hosted 25 invited talks with dedicated poster sessions. The Bajpai-Saha award for best student oral presentation was awarded to Ms. Anuradha Elamparithi, Sr Ramachandra University, Chennai and Ms. Lakshmi R. Nair, SCTIMST, India. Best poster awards were presented to Kiran Y. Vajanthri, NIT Rourkela, India and Suresh Shrestha, Kathmandu University, Nepal. Dr. Bikramjit Basu Materials Research Centre, IISc Bangalore (Member of the Society) has won the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award 2013. Several members of SBAOI attended the TERMIS-AP 2013 Annual Conference held at Wuzhen, China from 23-26 Oct 2013, the Joint International Congress 2013 in Yokohama of the Japanese Society for Artificial Organs and International Federation of Artificial Organs from September 27-29, 2013. The Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs India has a total of 740 members with 652 Indian Life Members, 30 Foreign Life Members, 40 Organizational members from India and abroad, 20 Awardee members and 2 Honorary members. There are four Biomaterials Science & Engineering Fellows (FBSE) namely; Dr. Chandra P. IUS-BSE Report 2013

The 23rd Annual Meeting of the Society along with the International Conference on "Design of Biomaterials - BIND-12" was held during December 9-11, 2012, at Material Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, with Dr. Bikramjit Basu as the Organising Secretary. This event was preceded by "Young Scientists Training Workshop" on Fundamentals of Biomaterials and Bio-Engineering. Prof. Myron Spector, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery (Biomaterials), Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA received the Chandra P. Sharma Award 2013 and delivered a plenary during this meeting. Over 200 delegates including eminent speakers from USA, UK, Germany, France, Nepal and India had participated in the conference. Best paper presented by the faculty was awarded with MAHE Award (Dr. Abhijit Mishra, IIT -  Gandhinagar), Dr. Saurabh Ghosh, IIT - Delhi and Dr. Biman Mandal, IIT - Guwahati) and Bajpai-Saha Award for the best student paper presentation (Greeshma T., IISc - Bangalore, Sanoj Reginald, ACNS - Kochi, and Neha Arya, IIT - Kanpur). The publication of a research paper in a high impact journal has always been a challenge and this has become increasingly difficult. In this context, a brief interactive session with the Editors of some of the leading journals in the field of biomaterials was organized during the national conference. Prof. David F. Williams (Biomaterials), Prof. Myron Spector (Biomedical Materials), Prof. Jonathan Knowles (Journal of Biomaterials Applications), Prof. Guy Daculsi (Journal of Bioceramics Development & Applications) and Prof. C.P. Sharma (Trends in Biomaterials and artificial Organs) were the panelists for the session.

The Chandra P Sharma Award 2012 to Prof. S.W. Kim, Distinguished Professor, Department of Bioengineering, University of Utah, USA was declared on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the 9th World Biomaterials Congress held at Chengdu, China during June 1, 2012. Prof. Marthanda Varma Sankaran Valiathan was awarded Fellow, Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) during the opening ceremony of the 9th WBC held at Chengdu, China during June 1, 2012. Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, Center for Nanofibers & Nanotechnology, NUS is selected for the Chandra P Sharma Award 2014. He will be receiving the award at the next annual meeting of the society at Nepal. The 24th Annual Meeting of the Society will be held at College of Biomedical Engineering and Applied Sciences, Kathmandu, Nepal from January 11-13, 2014 to be organised by Prof. Vishwa P. Shrivastava. Several members of SBAOI attended the 9th WBC held at Chengdu, China during June 1-5, 2012. A new regional chapter of SBAOI was started at Cochin with Prof. R. Jayakumar as the President and its first general body meeting was held at AMRITA Kochi on November 2, 2012. SBAOI has now a total membership of 715 working in the area of Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Medical Devices/Artificial Organs.

IUS-BSE Report 2011-2012

The 22nd Annual Meeting of the Society along with an International Conference on "Biomaterials, Implant Devices and Tissue Engineering - BIDTE-2012" was held at Rajalakshmi Engineering College (REC), Chennai from January 6-8, 2012 organized by Dr. T.M. Sridhar. Prof. Yasuhiko Tabata (Kyoto University, Japan) received the Chandra P Sharma Award for the year 2011 during the conference. Travel grant was awarded to Prof. Tabata by the International Federation of Artificial Organs for delivering the Plenary Lecture at Chennai. Over 600 delegates including eminent speakers from Japan, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, UK, South Africa, Nepal, New Zealand and from India had participated in the conference. Best paper presented by the faculty was awarded with MAHE Award (Dr. R. Narayani [first], Dr. Shiny Velayudhan [second], Dr. N. Padmasisni [third]) and Bajpai-Saha Award for the best student paper presentation (Ms. Susan M. Alex [first], Mr. B. Ratna Sunil [second], Ms. Sidhy Viha CV [third]). SBAOI has now a total membership of 679 working in the area of Biomaterials, Tissue Engineering and Medical Devices/Artificial Organs. Prof. S.W. Kim, Distinguished Professor, Department of Bioengineering, University of Utah, USA is selected for the Chandra P. Sharma Award for the year 2012. He will receive the award during the 23rd Annual Meeting of the Society at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore to be organized by Dr. Bikramjit Basu during December 9-11, 2012. Society members Dr. K. Kaladhar and Mr. Durgadas C.V. attended the 2011 Annual Meeting and Exposition, Society for Biomaterials at Florida USA, April 13-16, 2011. Society also endorsed the 13th CCT Conference (Ceramics, Cells and Tissues - Regenerative Nanomedicine, Tissue and Genetic Engineering, and the role of Ceramics conference) which was held at Faenza, Italy (May 17-20, 2011). Prof. M.S. Valiathan was nominated for IUS-BSE Fellowship.
